How to Calculate Amazon Seller Profit in India
Understand Amazon India's fee structure and calculate your true seller profit
Selling on Amazon India can be profitable, but only if you understand the complete fee structure. Amazon charges multiple fees including referral fees, closing fees, fulfillment fees (for FBA sellers), shipping charges, and GST on all fees. Many sellers are surprised to see how much these deductions reduce their actual profit.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Amazon India's fees and how to calculate your net profit accurately.
Amazon Referral Fee
What is the Referral Fee?
The referral fee is Amazon's commission for using its marketplace. It is calculated as a percentage of the total selling price (including shipping) and varies by product category. Amazon India typically charges between 5% to 45% referral fee depending on the category.
How Referral Fee Affects Profit
The referral fee is one of the largest deductions. For example, if Amazon charges a 12% referral fee on a product sold for ₹1,000, the referral fee is ₹120. This is deducted before you receive any payment.
Referral Fee Rate by Category
Each product category on Amazon India has a different referral fee rate. Electronics, clothing, books, home & kitchen — all have different commission structures. Always check the current fee schedule for your specific category.
Closing Fee
Amazon charges a closing fee per item sold. This is a fixed amount that depends on the product price and category. The closing fee ranges from ₹5 to ₹65 per item depending on the price bracket. This fee applies to all orders and is in addition to the referral fee.
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) Fees
FBA Shipping / Fulfillment Fee
If you use Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), Amazon handles storage, packing, and shipping of your products. In return, you pay fulfillment fees based on the product's weight and size.
FBA Storage Fee
Amazon charges storage fees for keeping your inventory in their warehouses. Storage fees are calculated per cubic foot per month and increase during the peak season (October to December).
FBA Fee Components
- Pick, pack & ship fee: Based on product size and weight
- Storage fee: Monthly charges based on inventory volume
- Long-term storage fee: Additional charges for inventory stored for more than 365 days
- Removal fee: Charges for removing unsold inventory
Shipping Charges (Self-Fulfilled / FBM)
If you fulfill orders yourself (FBM - Fulfilled by Merchant), you are responsible for shipping costs. Amazon may provide shipping labels in some cases, and the shipping charges are deducted from your settlement. The shipping cost depends on:
- Product weight and dimensions
- Delivery pin code / zone
- Shipping speed selected
- Whether Amazon Easy Ship or self-ship is used
GST on Amazon Fees
Amazon charges 18% GST on all its fees including referral fees, closing fees, and fulfillment fees. This means the total cost is higher than the base fee amount. For example, a referral fee of ₹120 becomes ₹141.60 after adding 18% GST (₹120 + ₹21.60 GST).
You may be eligible for Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the GST paid on Amazon fees. Consult your CA for proper GST reconciliation.
Other Amazon Fees
- Return shipping fee: Charges when customers return products
- Refund administration fee: Amazon may charge a fee for processing refunds
- Advertising fees: If you use Amazon PPC (Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands)
- Subscribe & Save fee: Additional discounts for subscription orders
- Late shipment fee: Penalties for late dispatch
- Cancellation fee: Charges when seller cancels orders
